The Haunted Bookcase – The Secret Entrance

The most unique feature of my downstairs game room is by far the entrance. The game room sits behind a bookcase, and in order to enter, you must pull a particular book on one of the shelves. Not only that, but several other books on the book case have been motorized, so they slide in and out on their respective shelves, giving the illusion that they are moving by themselves (or by ghosts). If you want a more in-depth read, the entire build was documented in great detail on KLOV.

What made the bookcase the perfect fit for my game room was that the room itself was added by the previous owner, with French doors leading into the room. With a lot of help from my dad, I built bookcases on to the existing doors, created a book-pull mechanism to replace the door handle, and then created “book moving” devices by using rotisserie motors, rubber bands/springs, and metal rods. With all of the books and finishing touches added, you absolutely cannot tell that there’s a room behind it. It’s pretty slick, if I say so myself!

Below are several photos of the project, along with some videos of it in action. Enjoy!
